History of Basketball

The history of basketball is much easier to trace than other sports. It is clear that Dr. James Naismith is credited with creating basketball and much of basketball history. Dr. Naismith, born in 1861 in Ontario, Canada first came up with the concept of basketball during his youth school days in the area where he played a game that involved knocking a rock off an object by attempting to throw another rock at it. The game obviously evolved from there and began the history of basketball.

Mr. Naismith taught at the YMCA School in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891, where the sport of basketball was created. He was faced with a problem of finding a sport that could be played indoors during the harsh Massachusetts winters. He needed to come up with a game that could be played in and outdoors and one that adopted a sense of skill and not just brawn. He first developed the game by involving a soccer ball and two peach baskets, who would have ever thought basketball history, could come from a soccer ball.

In addition to creating basketball Dr. Naismith became a medical doctor focused on sports science and was a minister. Naismith watched his sport grow to become one of the world's most popular sports that saw its entrance in the Olympics in 1936 at Berlin and he fixed himself a spot in basketball history.

The history of basketball began with teams of five and was the sports standard by 1897. The sport became popular to both men and women and began to spread throughout Canada and the US. The US servicemen took the sport overseas with them in WWII and the history of basketball became global.

U.S. colleges accepted the game and began to have it as a standard college sport. College basketball history took off around the late 1890's and the first college game began at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

Professional basketball history first began when the National Basketball League was created in the late 1800's around 1898. The league however did not last and was broken up after 5 years providing a rough start to basketball history. The break up just led to a number of random leagues forming themselves in the early 1900's and each was very loosely organized. Ironically enough the first super team was the Celtics but they were from New York City not Boston. The famous Harlem globetrotters were also founded around this time in 1927 and hold a place in basketball history as being the most entertaining of basketball teams.

It wasn't until 1949 that two professional basketball leagues the NBL and the BAA merged to create what we all know now as the National Basketball Association or the NBA. The Boston Celtics dominated the NBA from the late 1950s through the 1960s. By the 1960s, professional teams had formed throughout the United States and basketball was a mainstream powerhouse. Players such as Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russel and Kareem Abdul-Jabar all became household names that drew millions to watch them play as they all found a spot in basketball history.

National Basketball Association fell off the charts and was surpassed by football in popularity through the 1970's then got a resurgence from the popular Larry Bird and Magic Johnson era. Michael Jordan carried the league through the eighties and nineties and the torch has been passed on to Shaquille O'neal, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James. The history of basketball has never been so fascinating and it is all thanks to Dr. James Naismith.

Youth Basketball Shooting Drills

In the game of basketball, one of the most important parts of the game is being able to shoot the ball. If you can not shoot the ball, then you have a slim to nonexistent chance of scoring any points for your team. There are numerous different stances and techniques that you need to use in order to make a successful shot so it's important to teach these fundamentals to young basketball players early on. If kids can learn the proper techniques at an early age and then practice them consistently through fun shooting drills they will see improvement and enjoy playing basketball more.

Here are some shooting tips that you can use:

* The first thing that should be practiced when you are practicing youth basketball shooting, is showing the players on the youth basketball team the proper way to hold a basketball. This is one of the most common mistakes that are made with basketball players, especially children. There is a proper way to hold the basketball when you are shooting the ball. One hand guides the ball and the other give the power that is required to get it in the hoop.

* The second thing that needs to be taught when practicing shooting the basketball is the proper stance. It is hard to shoot the ball if you stand stiff and with your feet too close together. Show each one of your youth players the proper stance for shooting the basketball. Depending on how far away from the net the child is, they may have to bend their knees or actually jump when they shoot the ball. This is all part of the proper stance of shooting a basketball. So, make sure you are in the proper stance before you begin shooting the ball.

* The third thing is to aim directly at the box over the hoop. The idea is to cause a slight rebound that guides the ball into the hoop. It is important for players to learn to focus and aim at that point.

* The last thing to know when shooting the basketball is your limitations. You may love to play basketball and be a decent player, but making shots from the half court line may be a little much for youth basketball. In fact, making shoots from the half court line in adult basketball is tough. So, it is important to teach children on youth basketball teams to know where to shoot the basketball from. Teach them to shoot the basketball from the free throw line and the three point line as a starting point on where to shoot the ball from. These are more realistic shooting points for youth basketball players.

And with these tips, a basketball player can be a better shooter. Besides the above examples of shooting drills, there are plenty of books and free websites like Weplay.com, where you can find basketball drills to improve your game as well as teach others.

By Trevor Sumner who works for Weplay.com, a youth basketball community dedicated to providing parents coaches and athletes the tools and information to celebrate the love of the game. Weplay.com has one of the most comprehensive, free basketball drill libraries in its active basketball community.

Basketball Hoop Nets - What Kinds Are Available?

When you are looking for basketball hoops and goals, you also need to consider the type of net you will use. For many units, the net comes as part of the package but you can buy this item separately as well. To make a good choice when it comes to basketball nets, you need to educate yourself about the different types that are available.

Not all basketball nets are constructed from nylon. You can also choose a chain net. Since chain will last longer than a nylon net, it is a good long-term investment when you are looking for quality equipment for the gym or playground. When you are looking at updating your existing basketball nets, consider the cost against the number of years of use you will get from them.

You may be able to buy nylon basketball nets for a lower price, but you should also plan on replacing them much more often than if you bought a chain net in the first place. You also need to factor in the time it will take to re-equip your basketball hoops and goals with nylon nets every so often. This type of maintenance should be factored in when you are trying to make the best decision about your basketball equipment needs. Considering your initial investment upfront, and the lasting benefits of your equipment may help you justify a slightly higher expense for a better product.

The FT10 can be used in competition. It is also suitable for home use when you want to upgrade your existing basketball net to something that is of better quality. The FT10 is made from braided nylon and comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Another choice to consider when it comes to basketball nets is the FT10AW. This product is made from a heavier nylon braid than the FT10. The advantage to choosing it over the F10 is the fact that it reduces the whip that is commonly experienced with lighter-weight nets. Again, this basketball net comes with a one-year warranty.

The FT11E is an economy chain net that will last longer than a nylon one. It can be used with any style of basketball goal and is attached to it with "S" hooks. This zinc-plated net comes with a one-year limited warranty.

For consumers who are prepared to invest in a higher-quality chain basketball net, consider the F11. Welded hoops mean that there is no risk of injury to the players. The chain net can be attached to any style of basketball goal, and heavy duty "S" hooks are used for this purpose. It is zinc plated, and comes with a one-year warranty.

Before you decide to invest in a chain basketball net, it's a good idea to make sure that the unit you are considering can be used with the style of basketball goal you are working with. That way, you can be sure that you are getting the right product for your needs. As long as the chain net can be used with your existing basketball goal, this is the choice that will be more durable over the long term.

Today, he offers advice on the different types of basketball hoop nets. If you're looking for a new basketball hoop, there are also many different types of nets to choose from. Depending on whether you're looking for a net for an indoor portable basketball hoop or an outdoor system.

How to Choose Basketball Hoops For Different Skills and Ages

Basketball hoops that are designed for use by the youngest of players are readily available for school, community and home use. Depending on your venue and the space available you'll find that your selection includes adjustable height hoops, permanent in-ground varieties, roof mounted goals and portable basketball systems. So how do you make an informed choice? Here's what you need to know.

A basketball goal with a basketball hoop is going to fundamentally be the same regardless of its designed purpose, consisting of a ring, usually with a net, designed to allow a thrown ball to pass through. However, the similarities for many different types of basketball hoops and goals end there.

Many types of basketball goals are designed to be very simple, often for very young children still learning muscle and motor control or even designed as a simple novelty. Other types of basketball goals are designed to be used in professional competition, such as NCAA or even NBA games. These are designed to take the repeated abuse of multiple, heavy slam dunks and hanging off the rim without breaking.

If you are shopping for a basketball goals for your children you'll need to consider factors like the available space, future needs and skill requirements. Younger children will naturally require a basketball goal that is capable of accommodating their skills. Adjustable height basketball systems are ideal because you can set a child up for success, and challenge them as needed.

A wall mounted basketball hoop is just as the name implies, a basketball hoop mounted onto a wall. Unlike a basketball hoop mounted to the top of a garage or on a rigid, heavy goal post, most wall mounted basketball hoops are designed for very light, casual use only.

These types of basketball hoops typically mount onto a drywall surface, but may also include brackets or other hardware to mount onto a door or to an office cubicle wall. Even a light slam dunk may be enough to tear this type of basketball hoop off the mounting surface, and leave significant scarring onto drywall. Look for solid mounting hardware or stable "nosecone" installation when selecting a unit that will last for years. You'll also find quality hoops that can be installed on slanted roofs that are more stable.

For long term use, you want to select a basketball hoops that is a long term investment. This means that outdoor models should be powder coated. Adjustable basketball goals should be easy to modify. And any goals or hoops should be strong enough to meet the current and future needs of your players. So consider that a lightweight portable unit may not be appropriate for teenagers hanging off the rims.

Finally, really take a look at the practicality of your investment. Will younger players still want to play with a 10 foot hoop they have little chance of reaching? Will teens that are developing professional skills be challenged enough if they have to hold back from playing their hardest? The bottom line is to take a little time to look at all the options in basketball hoops until you find one that makes sense for you.

Spalding TF 1000 Basketballs Review

The name Spalding says it all, as this brand of basketball is well-known throughout the world and has been since the late 1800's. In particular the Spalding TF 1000 basketballs are known to be state of the art when it comes to technology as the balls have a far better grip and are far more consistent than their counterparts. They are extremely strong and durable and when playing you won't have to worry about the ball breaking like the old models of leather basketballs.

However, there are some of the professional basketball players that have stated that they don't' like the new basketballs and still prefer the old balls. This is merely a matter of opinion and it all depends on what one get used to. Professionals want to know of the new basketballs really do what the manufacturers stipulate they do. Well we will only find out when the new NBA basketball season starts which is in October 2010.

The new Spalding TF 1000 basketballs do not bounce as high which means that when the ball is passed on the fast break the technique could be slightly different. The TF 1000's bounce off the rims slightly more as they are stickier as opposed to their counterparts which will allow the players to make better plays around the basket, as the basketball has a far better grip.

There seems to be some mixed feeling among the professional basketball player, as some have stated that they think the balls grip is much better which will enable them to perform more tricks, and then others have stated such as Shaquille O'Neal that changing the technology was not a good idea. For instance Dwayne Wade has stated that the grip is really good and that he prefers it to the old basketballs.

Many of the professional basketball players state that the most ideal ball would be that feels the same as the older models, and that the basket ball feel comfortable in all situations. In my opinion I think that the Spalding TF 1000 basketballs are going to prove those that oppose the ball wrong and that when the basketball season starts in October many of the professionals will be switching to the TF 1000.

The Spalding TF 1000 basketballs are going to become a sought after basketball due to the state of the art technology whereby the ball has a far better bounce and a far better grip. Once the players get acquainted with the feel this will most definitely be the basket ball of the future.

If you are just starting out in the world of basketball you may be curious as to what is in store for you. The very first thing that you need to know is that it is very important to have a great basketball workout at least every day. This will help you stay at your optimal performance level during basketball season. Once you get into a great basketball workout routine you will increase your goals and increase your performance.

Main Basketball Workout Tips

• When you start your basketball workouts, practice for one full hour on the court and at least 45 minutes in the weight room.
• Basketball training should be done at least seven hours a week but no more than eight.
• Always ask someone for help if you are unsure of what training methods you should use.
• Don't forget to work the key areas of your body, such as your legs and upper body. This will give you an optimal figure for basketball training.

Workouts for the Weight Room

Many people who start basketball training in the weight room just go in and simply lift weights. For the best basketball practice it is better to do different exercises instead of focusing on just lifting weights. Doing exercises like deadlifts, chin-ups, rows, dumbbell presses, split squats and squats will help you to increase your basketball skills. Do not go back into the weight room each day and do the same number of repetitions of each exercise. Always make sure that you do more than you did the day before. This will help you increase your skill level which in turn will help you play better in basketball.

Vertical Lift Jumping For Basketball Workouts

Having your feet strong is one of the greatest keys in basketball. Basketball workouts are best suited when they include plenty of foot strengthening exercises. One of these great exercises is called the vertical lift jump. The vertical lift jump increases your foot strength which in turn helps you to play basketball much better than someone who has not had basketball training with vertical lift jumping.

Some great tips for vertical lift jumping are:

• Always remember to train barefoot or if not a shoe that lets you feel thru it.
• Practice jumping rope which will help you to get your plantar muscles stiff and make your ankles stronger.
• Practice jumping and make sure that you master a high speed.

Following these tips will help you to maximize your goals on the basketball field. Remember that basketball workouts will help you and you should never miss a basketball training session. Making sure that you practice every day will help you to make sure you are at your strongest and at your peak performance level. Always be sure to get support from your coaches and other teammates when doing a basketball workout. The coaches can help you practice to the best of your ability and encourage you to work hard on your basketball workout. Remember that practice makes perfect and always remember to focus on quality and not quantity during your basketball training.

Everybody loves to view a solid basketball game. Basketball has become one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Older people like to watch it on TV. Children as well as teenagers simply adore playing the game. Wherever you go there are basketball players competing on the nearby court. The game promotes good fitness, so individuals ought to get out and play a game for a good workout. Moreover, playing basketball will take your mind off of the tough issues of life.

Basketball can cause severe injury when safety measure isn't used. Basketball is a game that requires a lot of jumping and running, therefore it is not uncommon to injure the calves. In order to prevent injury, a basketball player must look at basketball shoes.

Basketball shoes cannot be just basketball themed sneakers. Basketball players rely on these shoes to keep themselves safe and sound on the court. An excellent pair of brand name shoes not only prevents injury, but improves the overall performance of the player.

The truth is, manufacturers of excellent basketball shoes, such as Adidas are aware that basketball demands lots of movements in all directions. There is a temptation for players to sprain their own ankles when they are forced to change direction suddenly. For that reason, basketball shoes are meant to permit many directions of ankle motion. Sporting a tennis shoe in basketball is a costly error. Wear a set of cross-trainers if you want your shoe to have more use.

Finally, be comfy within the shoes you wear whenever running and jumping. Don't let appearance determine your choice of shoes. Try on the shoe you wish to buy in a store. There probably will be a shoe that is ideal for you. Overall, it is most important that you find a pair of shoes which feels good and also matches your basketball playing style.

Are you looking for the perfect pair of Basketball shoes? Consider T-Mac Shoes [http://tmacbasketballshoes.com] for an elite brand. Many NBA basketball players use T-Mac Basketball shoes [http://tmacbasketballshoes.com] to perform better on the court.

Buying Basketballs - Facts You Have to Know For Buying a Basketball For Your Hoop

Buying a basketball isn't as simple as just picking up anything that has Spalding written across it. There are actually lots of different kinds of basketballs and basketball materials. Once you understand the variety of basketball materials, you can buy basketballs with confidence

Rubber Basketballs - This is the cheapest of all basketball materials. If you are simply buying it for kids it will work out fine, but you might think about higher quality balls if you buying for someone who plans on playing frequently or plays competitively. They don't offer very good grip, and generally are designed for outdoor use only. One helpful advantage that these basketball offer, however is that they can come in a broad variety of colors. This makes them good for balls used in dodge ball or even playing unconventional basketball games on the court.

Synthetic Leather Basketballs - These balls are a lot better and offer better grip and feel at a reasonable price. The synthetic leather is designed to feel like leather after it has broken in, though they aren't quite as durable as leather basketballs. If you don't want to go as cheap as rubber basketballs but don't have the budget for a very high quality ball, these are an ideal choice.

Composite Leather -   These basketballs combine both real and synthetic leather, and the end result is the best of both worlds. They combine affordability with real playability. In fact, composite leather basketballs are the most popular kind of basketball that you can see on home courts today, and are even sometimes used in NCAA games. The two main types of these balls are "wide channel" and "narrow channel" depending upon the black channels are on the ball. Which one you prefer is a matter of personal choice, but many find that wide channel models are easier to shoot.

Leather Basketballs - These are exact same kind of ball that professionals use when they step onto the court. They are mostly designed for indoor use, though some people say that they are still fine when playing on a clean outdoor surface. You should be careful with these basketballs, however, as they might take some time to break in. After you have worked the leather a little bit by dribbling it, however, nothing beats the grip of a true leather basketball.

Before you buy basketball [http://www.basketballhoopbuyingguide.com/buy-basketball.html] equipment like this, make sure you know who you are buying for. It will make all the difference in terms of which basket ball that you choose to buy.

My Top 12 Favorite Basketball Movies

If you like basketball then you are aware of the drama and excitement that goes into a game as some of the best players score with spectacular dunks or last second 3-point shots from half court. This is what makes basketball one of the most interesting games in sports. But if you are like me, then you also enjoy a good movie with a basketball theme whether it be a drama or a comedy. So sit back and enjoy reading this article as I list my top 12 favorite basketball movies and maybe you will agree that these are the best choices to grace your movie collection.

Here are my top 12 favorite basketball movies from #12 to #1:

12.) Blue Chips (1994)- Nick Nolte stars as Pete Bell, a college basketball coach for the fictional Western University Dolphins. Desperate after a losing season, the team begins to give incentives to players in hopes of recruiting new talent. In the end, Pete Bell becomes disgusted in what his team has become and announces after a press conference about all the activities that have been going on and resigns as coach. Real life NBA players, Shaquille O'Neal and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway have key roles in this movie as well.

11.) Teen Wolf (1985)- This entertaining film stars Michael J. Fox as Scott Howard, who discovers that he has a family "curse" that allows him to become a werewolf. When he unexpectantly changes into the wolf during a game, he starts to become very popular among his peers and leads his basketball team from last to first place. Although he is admired by most of the school, his "transformation" becomes a problem for his close friends because of his popularity and arrogance he now has. In the end he plays a game as himself instead of the wolf and after being fouled during the final seconds of the game, he makes two foul shots that win the game by one point.

10.) Rebound: The Legend of Earl "The Goat" Manigault (1996)- Don Cheadle stars as Earl "The Goat" Manigault, a street baller whose life spiraled out of control because of heroin abuse. Once destined for the NBA because of his basketball skills and dunking ability, his addiction leads him to prison where he is able to overcome his drug problem and start a tournament for kids in Harlem called "Walk Away From Drugs". Forest Whitaker and James Earl Jones also star.

9.) Hoosiers (1986)- Gene Hackman stars as Norman Dale, a controversial coach who lost his previous job for striking a student. At first, he is not well liked by the town because of his defensive-style of coaching and his temper, which leads him to be ejected on several occasions. The town is holding a meeting to decide whether they should get rid of Dale when Jimmy Chitwood, the best player in town, announces he will play for the team only if Dale is the coach. From this point on, Hickory becomes an unstoppable team in which they advance to the state finals and win it in the final seconds. This movie is a prime example of the underdog prevailing.

8.) Glory Road (2006)- This film is based on a true story dealing with the events leading to the 1966 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, in which the late Don Haskins, head coach of the Texas Western College led a team with an all-black starting lineup, a first in NCAA history. Josh Lucas stars as Coach Haskins and Jon Voight has a part as Coach Adolph Rupp.

7.) He Got Game (1998)- Spike Lee wrote and directed this sports-drama about Jake Shuttlesworth, a prison inmate convicted of murdering his wife. Jake is also the father of Jesus Shuttlesworth, the top-ranked basketball prospect in the country. Jake is released on parole for a week by the governor in order to persuade his son to play for the governor's alma mater in exchange for a heavily reduced prison sentence. Denzel Washington stars as Jake and real-life NBA player, Ray Allen, stars as Jesus Shuttlesworth.

6.) The Air Up There (1994)- Kevin Bacon stars as Jimmy Dolan, a college basketball assistant-coach who wants to find a new star for his team since he believes this will get him a promotion to Head Coach at the school. After seeing a video of a new prospect named Saleh, Jimmy travels to Africa and tries to persuade him to play for the school. Saleh is the chief's son and has his own responsibilities at home since the tribe's land is threatened by a mining company with their own basketball team. In the end, the tribe and the mining company face each other in a winner-take-all basketball match and Jimmy plays with the tribe.

5.) White Men Can't Jump (1992)- This movie is the story of Billy Hoyle and Sidney Deane, white and black basketball players of the outdoor courts who team up together to hustle other street ballers who are under the assumption that Billy can't play because he is white. They team together for a two-on-two tournament and win the $5,000 dollar prize but Billy's gambling habits cause problems with his relationship with his girlfriend Gloria, who ends up leaving him. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes star as Billy and Sydney and Rosie Perez stars as Woody's girlfriend Gloria.

4.) The Basketball Diaries (1995)- This movie is a biopic of the life of Jim Carroll, a once promising star basketball player for his high school. His life starts to unravel as he becomes addicted to heroin and will go to great lengths to supply his habit, even going as far as stealing, robbing, and prostituting himself. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jim Carroll.

3.) Eddie (1996)- Whoopie Goldberg stars in this hilarious movie. She plays Edwina "Eddie" Franklin, a limousine driver and avid Knicks fan who attends every game with a small group of fellow fans in the nosebleed section of Madison Square Garden. During halftime of one game she is one of three fans chosen to take part in a publicity stunt where if she makes a free-throw shot she will get a chance to become an honorary coach, which she wins. After the Knicks head coach is forced to quit before a game, Eddie is then named head coach. She is able to steer the team into play-off contention after a dismal start and soon earns the respect of the team.

2.) Coach Carter (2005)- This movie is based on a true story, in which Richmond High School head basketball coach Ken Carter made headlines for benching his undefeated team for poor academic results. This movie not only focuses on the basketball season but also on the personal lives of the team off the court. Samuel L. Jackson is impressive as Ken Carter and also casts a young ensemble of future stars such as Channing Tatum and Rick Gonzalez.

1.) Semi-Pro (2008)- This is a hysterical movie from start to finish. It stars Will Ferrell as Jackie Moon, a singer who used the profits from his one hit single, "Love Me Sexy" to buy a basketball team from the American Basketball Association called the Flint Tropics where he is owner, head coach, and starting forward. The plot centers on the merger of the league into the NBA where only four teams from the ABA will be allowed into the NBA. Jackie proposes that the top four teams should be the ones to go to the NBA. This sets the stage for one hilarious movie. Woody Harrelson and Andre Benjamin co-star.

So this concludes my list of twelve favorite basketball movies. Whether you are looking for a drama or a hilarious comedy, you can't go wrong with these twelve movies. So next time you are at your local video store, be sure to pick up a copy of one of these great movies.

Shooting the Basketball - What it is and How It's Done

The game of basketball is already one of the most popular sports around the world, and it is growing in popularity all the time. With high-profile players like Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal, kids from all backgrounds are gaining interest in the game. Besides their favorite players, fans love to play the game because it is fast-paced and exciting.

Basketball requires speed, strength and stamina, and all of these skills contribute to shooting. The object of the game of basketball is to make baskets, and you can't make a basket without taking a shot. That is why becoming a good shooter is the desire of all basketball players.

The more shots your team makes, the higher your score will be and the better your chances for winning the game. Since shooting is so important to winning, it is no wonder why learning to shoot well is such an important aspect of the game of basketball. In fact, many people think shooting is the single most important of all basketball skills.

The act of shooting is when the player shoots the basketball, the goal being to make it into the net. Most of the time, a basket is worth two points, but if you make a shot from outside the three-point arc, that basket is worth three points.

Types of Basketball Shots

Good shooters are versatile; they can shoot the ball from many places on the court, and they can shoot from a standing position, shoot while running, walking, and even take a shot while jumping. There are several different types of shots in basketball. Here are some of the most common:

The Set Shot. A set shot is usually made from a standing position and is most commonly used during the free throw. The set shot is one of the easiest shots in basketball.

The Jump Shot The jump shot is not so easy, because it is done in mid-air. The higher you can jump while you shoot, the better your jump shot will be. You want to jump as high as possible, because your opponent will be doing their best to block you from making the basket. Take care during a jump shot to make sure you don't get called for a traveling violation.

The Lay-Up A lay-up is done while the player is in motion. The shooting player takes a shot at the net without stopping to take up a shooting position. The lay-up is a great opportunity for your opponent to snatch the ball away, so undertake this shot with caution.

The Slam Dunk The slam dunk is probably the most famous of all shots in the game of basketball. If a player can master the slam dunk, they can become a super star. In a slam dunk, the player jumps up and dunks the ball directly into the net. It's fun to watch and even more fun to do, as long as the ball goes in. An unsuccessful slam dunk is called an air ball.

Ways To Improve Your Basketball Shots

Shooting is one of the most coveted skills in basketball, and there are many ways to improve your shooting techniques. Here are some of the most effective:

Balance The better your balance, the better your chances for making successful shots. Good balance will improve your skill as a basketball player.

Good Hands You use your hands to throw the basketball into the net, and this requires a certain amount of force which needs to be adjusted depending on the circumstances of the shot. Pay attention to the specific details of each shot: distance, height, range, and train your hands to follow through appropriately.

Keep Your Head In The Game Even though you need strength and other physical attributes to be good at basketball, your mental game can be what puts you above your opponents. Pay attention and keep your focus on what is going on in the game at all times.

Shooting is probably the most important skill you can work on if you want to become a basketball great. Follow the tips and pointers above, and you can be on your way to more fun and skill on the court.

The NBA's 100 Greatest Plays [VHS]

The NBA's 100 Greatest Plays [VHS]Perhaps more than any other sport, basketball is a star-driven event: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O'Neal--the list could go on and on. But it's not necessarily these athletes' overall careers that we remember as much as the breathtaking individual plays these illustrious men have given us. Is it possible to break down a hundred of these greatest moments in NBA history? The NBA's 100 Greatest Plays certainly tries.

While last-minute heroics tend to be the standard by which we define excellence, there are many other moments that have left an indelible impression, many of them highlighted here. The video clips fall into 10 categories: Dunks, Alley-oops, Assists, Steals, Blocks, Teamwork, the Clutch Shot, Moves, Hustle, and Buzzer-Beaters. At the beginning of each section is a brief introduction. Before showing the top 10 dunks of all time, for example, we learn about the evolution of the dunk--from the first slam to the man who could fly, Michael Jordan--and we hear background commentary from NBA legends such as Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Dr. J, and Bill Russell. This video recalls familiar moments of NBA lore that you will want to own for countless repeat viewings. --Jeremy Storey

How to Kick Butt at Basketball Camp and Get Scholarships For High School Students

Do you know Why It so Important To Kick Butt at Basketball Camp? Yes, it is FUN. That is one reason. But a more important reason is it gives you a GREAT chance to get your foot in the door of a college basketball scholarship.

So, you may be asking, Why would doing well at basketball camp make that much of a difference? Simple! Because the most important step in getting recruited to play college basketball is getting coaches to NOTICE You. Kicking Butt at Basketball Camp can get you noticed FAST.

Getting a basketball scholarship takes many steps. However, if nobody knows about you, no matter how good you are,...you won't get recruited.

College coaches are always looking for good athletes who can better their teams. If you are a high school player who is wanting a college scholarship, the Basketball Camp is the perfect place for both the coach and the player to get to know each other.

It is the job of the player to WOW the coaches. The coaches need to know who and where the good players are and all about them before they can recruit them for their teams.

How do they find the best players for their teams? They usually don't do it by just surfing the net. The may find out some information on the Internet. But, they get most of their player info from other coaches and recruiters they have learned to trust.

Coaches may play against each other, but listen up... They are still friends with each other as well. They know other coaches on every level. And, they are all looking for great new players.

Coaches usually move around quite a bit, and they form many friendships with other basketball coaches wherever they go. Coaches value the friendships they have with other basketball coaches.

They are just like the rest of us; they love to be the first one to pass on good info. They talk among themselves all the time about the game of basketball and how and where they can find super new recruits. Coaches trust the opinion of a fellow coach who is also a friend rather than the word of a stranger.

The big time coaches use recruiters and scouts. They also talk with booster club members and sports big shots. In other words, they will listen to the people they already know and trust.

News of a "hot" basketball player travels fast. Today, with a click of a mouse or a phone call, a coach two thousand miles away can learn of a new up-and-coming athlete. This is really how word gets around in the world of college basketball. News of a high school star point guard could travel around the country in a matter of minutes.

What can a high school basketball player do who wants to play college basketball do to get this important attention from coaches? Easy, strut your stuff where the coach can see you or hear about you. Be a basketball camp STAND OUT! The camps are super places for coaches on every level to find new good players. They will be keeping their eyes open for any player who could become a basketball star.

Make the coaches think about what they could do with you if they could have you on their teams. Make them think, hey, with just a little coaching from me; this kid could be a raving sensation when he gets to college. They will be drooling over you. Believe me, if you do Kick Butt At Basketball Camp, the coaches will keep you in mind for their teams.

So, it is very important for anyone who wants a college basketball scholarship to attend as many of the camps as possible.

Just one super day or hour or even just one great play that is seen by just one coach or even a friend of a coach could lead to a full-ride college basketball scholarship. If you can jump out of the gym, believe me, the coaching world will hear about you.

Campers should arrive at camp in tip-top shape. The coaches will give little attention or time to a player who is out of shape. At least know and use basic basketball skills. The coaches will notice those who come to camp prepared. Campers who arrive at camp in great shape and have and use basic basketball skills will have many opportunities to build upon their basic skills.

Portable Basketball Hoops - A Checklist Before You Buy

If you want to enjoy all the benefits of having a basketball hoop without all of the major work involved in installing an in ground hoop, a portable basketball goal is the way to go. But even then you shouldn't rush into purchasing a portable basketball backboard. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you make that basketball goal purchase.

What size Backboard is best for you?

Portable basketball hoop backboards come in one of two shapes: rectangular and fan shaped. When given a choice, you should always opt for the square shaped backboard because it offers you a lot more area to do bank shots.

The basketball backboard size is also important. On the lower end, you might find very inexpensive basketball hoops with forty two or forty four inch backboards while pro style basketball systems can have backboards that are a full six feet across (though these models can cost a couple thousand dollars.) The bigger the basketball backboard that you can afford, the better.

What should the Backboard be Made of?

Portable backboards on basketball hoops usually are one of three materials: graphite, acrylic, and polycarbonate. However, on some higher end basketball systems you will occasionally see glass backboards. Graphite is an opaque material and is only found on the cheapest of the cheap backboards. It doesn't provide very good rebound, and should only be considered a serious option if you are just looking for a discount basketball hoop to shoot around on.

Acrylic is the next step up, and is still usually found on relatively inexpensive systems. Polycarbonate feels and reacts just like acrylic backboards, but polycarbonate is different in that it is about five times more durable. This means that it will last longer and just stand up to rougher use.

What is the Overhang on the basketball Hoop?

Overhang is the distance from the pole to the backboard. On the cheapest portable basketball hoops, this is zero, which means the backboard is attached directly to the pole. On higher end residential portable basketball hoops, the bracket can extend the backboard three feet from the pole. Try to get as large an overhang as you can. The larger the overhang, the safer it will be to do charging layups and the easier it will be to play underneath the basketball hoop.

What size base is best for you?

The base of your portable basketball hoop is vital to the stability of the backboard, and the quality of the rebounds. You want to try to get the largest portable basketball base that you can. The larger the base is, the more water or sand it will be able to hold, and the more stable it will be generally. You should also check out the base for additional features that might improve your basketball experience. For example, some models have a handle attached to the front that makes it a lot easier to move the basketball hoop to a different location. Others have hooks in the back that make it even easier to totally stabilize.

Before you make that final decision on purchasing a basketball hoop, get the the complete picture at basketballhoopbuyingguide.com. It contains all the information to save you money and make sure you get the best possible basketball hoop for your needs in your driveway.

Rebound!: Basketball, Busing, Larry Bird, and the Rebirth of Boston

Rebound!: Basketball, Busing, Larry Bird, and the Rebirth of Boston

In the mid-1970s, the city of Boston entered a period of upheaval on both its historic cobblestone streets and its legendary parquet basketball court. The Boston Celtics’ long dominance of the NBA came to an abrupt end, and the city's image as a hub of social justice was shaken to its core. When the federal courts declared, in 1974, that the city was in violation of school desegregation rulings and would need to institute a busing program, Boston became deeply polarized.

????????? Then, just as the city was struggling to pull itself out of economic and social turmoil, the Boston Celtics drafted a forward from Indiana State named Larry Bird. Upon the arrival of the “Hick from French Lick” to Boston in 1979, the fates of team and city were reborn. Pride, championships, reduced crime, and an economic boom re-emerged in Boston.

????????? In Rebound!, author Michael Connelly chronicles these parallel but intertwining worlds. It is an account of a city in financial, moral, and social decline brought back to life by the re-emergence of the Boston Celtics dynasty and the return of hope, purpose, and pride to “Hub of the Universe.” Interviews with city officials, former players, and others on the frontlines provide a fascinating exploration into this tumultuous time.

The Art of Rebounding a Basketball Without Letting the Ball "Slip" Through Your Fingers

You cannot become a championship caliber team or player without dominating the backboard! The team that controls the backboard during a basketball game would most likely win. Why? More basketball rebounds leads to more possessions, and more possessions lead to more second-chance scoring opportunities. And, the team with the most second-chance scoring opportunities will win.

How important is rebounding? Every player on a team should learn how to rebound effectively, regardless of your position on the team. The reasoning behind this is that, every player should form the habit of attempting to grab the rebound after either an offensive or defensive shot has been made. Each player should always assume that the shot will be missed. With that being said, a team should have five solid rebounders on the basketball court at all times during a game.

What are the traits of a great basketball rebounder? Although your size and height as a basketball player could give you an advantage when attempting to rebound a basketball, they're not the primary determining factors to becoming a great rebounder. For example, Dennis "the worm" Rodman was one of the most prolific rebounders in the NBA (National Basketball Association), despite the fact that he was an average height of 6-7" as a professional basketball player and barely weighed 210 lbs. Although he was not a great scorer, his uncanny yet masterful ability to successfully grab rebounds (both on offense and defense) helped his teams win several NBA titles and earned him two consecutive defensive player of the year awards, which is an incredible accomplishment. What Dennis Rodman and other great rebounders knew is that, one of the main keys to effective rebounding is Positioning--not your height or size.

Floor Positioning

A great rebounder always establishes an excellent floor position when attempting to grab a rebound. An excellent floor position means that you fight for the inside position by being closer to the basketball hoop than your opponent, regardless of whether you are trying to grab an offensive or defensive rebound.

Grabbing the Rebound

Once you have established an inside position, the most effective way to grab a rebound is by leaping straight up in the air with great explosiveness and power using both feet, keeping your legs spread apart and butt pointing outward, and grabbing the basketball with both hands. Bring the basketball in front of you after you grab it instead of keeping it over your head.

This keeps your opponent away from you, and prevents him from grabbing the basketball or smacking it out of your hands as you are coming back down after you have grabbed the rebound.

Catch all rebounds instead of batting the basketball into the air or out of bounds. This would allow you and your team to maintain possession of the basketball.

Protecting the basketball after a Rebound

All your effort to grab the rebound and regain possession of the basketball would be in vain if you do not protect the basketball on your way down. Remember, after you grab a rebound, you will usually be surrounded by opponents that are standing by ready and eager to steal the basketball from you. Be alert and vigilante!

As you land after grabbing a rebound, bring the basketball in under your chin (Chinning the basketball) with your elbows out and with a hand on each side of the basketball gripping it tightly. Do not swing your elbows wildly in order to keep your opponent(s) away from you, because doing so might lead to a foul violation.

Pivot away from an opponent that might be trying to steal the basketball away from you. Do not put the basketball on the floor immediately after going up for a rebound, especially if you are surrounded by your opponents.

Keep your head up after grabbing the rebound so that you can easily scan the entire basketball court to see if you can find an open teammate who might be positioned to lead a fast break for an easy score.

There you have it...Becoming an awesome rebounder is as simple as (1) Establishing great inside position; (2) Grabbing the rebound; and, (3) Protecting the basketball after you grab the rebound. With constant practise, there is no reason why you cannot become a top, if not the best, rebounder for your basketball team. In addition to mastering the mechanics of grabbing a rebound as illustrated above, equally as important is developing a mindset or attitude that you will attempt to grab every rebound during a basketball game. Remember, it is not the "size" of the rebounder that matters; rather, it is his burning desire to go after every rebound.

Basketball Hoops - Consider the FT192 Breakaway Goal

You've got a lot of choices in breakaway basketball hoops. Here is a primer on some of the best ones, and their features, so that you can decide which is right for you. One standard recommendation is the FT192. It 's a good, solid breakaway goal. However, some people may require a breakaway basketball system that can withstand greater force loads and more demanding use, or a basketball goal that is built to even greater engineering and design requirements.

If you are one of these people, you should strongly consider the improved FT 192TA goal. Like the First Team's rim, the FT 192TA breakaway basketball rim comes with many features designed to give the basketball goal a professional, authentic look while also giving the basketball goal a durable, long lasting design and construction. However, the FT 192TA goal features many improvements and other key design changes from the FT 192 breakaway basketball goal. These upgrades give the FT 192TA breakaway basketball goal a superior design, making it even more durable, longer lasting and able to take on greater and more punishing basketball stunts as well as your average slam dunk.

For example, the FT 192TA goal has a "Tuff Tie" tubular net hangar design, replacing the FT 192 basketball goal's continuous net locks, in order to meet these more demanding requirements. One important feature that the FT 192TA goal retains from the FT 192 basketball goal is the important breakaway feature. A breakaway basketball goal is a basketball goal that can bend and flex at the neck joining the hoop to the mounting hardware. This is important because it allows the basketball hoop to transfer heavy loads to the mounting hardware through the next, preventing damage.

A more rigid goal will simply break at the neck under similar heavy loads; the FT 192TA however will simply spring back into position. What makes this breakaway basketball goal different from the original model is that its breakaway tension is fully adjustable, from 170 all the way up to 230 pounds. This gives you - and the basketball goal - greater flexibility depending in the different types of use or level of competition you expect your basketball goal to face up against.

The rim will mount on any standard backboard surface, so mounting this more demanding basketball goal will be little different from a cheaper model. It features a powder coat finish, to match the authentic, professional design and construction with an authentic, professional look that will not only look at home on an NBA court, but will also maintain that look for many years.

The rim is perfect to fit the demands and needs of high school and college level competitions, and meets all NCAA and high school regulations. Like many breakaway basketball goals, an anti-whip net and mounting hardware are included. It matches its superior design and construction, and you should look for it with the five year Superior warranty. One thing that is not superior about the FT 192A is its weight; with a shipping weight of only 26 pounds and a mounting area is 5 inches by 4-5 inches, installing the FT 192TA basketball hoop is as easy as breaking it is difficult.

Basketball Hoops

When basketball was discovered, the hoop was actually a basket, hence the name basketball. As time went on, the basic backboard became bigger, and as rules changed, the net was added. Different styles of basketball hoops are available, for residential, institutional, and gymnasium uses.

There are both indoor and outdoor types of basketball hoops. The introduction of low-priced basketball hoops on the market made basketball more popular. Most hoops have height-adjusting capabilities, from 7' to 11'. Most have steel backboard frames. These types of steel hoops are called lifetime basketball hoops. The hoops can be anchored on the wall (wall-anchor frames) or in the ground (ground-anchor frames) or portable. Some portable basketball hoops have bases that have to be filled with water or by sand. Portable basketball hoops allow you to play basketball anywhere. New portable basketball hoops are less expensive and easier to maintain.

The diameter of the hoop is usually same, except in certain local fairs. There are

specially designed basketball hoops with second rims for players who want to develop some special abilities. Some basketball hoops are provided with an auto rebounder that returns the ball to the shooter after every shot. There are mini-basketball hoops for fun and for relieving stress, especially when you are in the office.

If you buy basketball hoops for children, it is recommended that you buy an adjustable hoop so you can start them with low height and you won't have to buy a new one every year. Before buying a basketball hoop, compare different offers and features. The price of basketball hoops vary according to use, design, and materials used. The price of an outdoor hoop starts at $450, an institutional hoop starts at $5,000, portable indoor hoop starts at $550, and portable outdoor starts at $350. Many basketball hoop manufacturers offer a five-year warranty. Both new and used basketball hoops are available on the market. If you are buying an old one, make sure that the rims are not bent or dirty.

Basketball Goals - Best Choice For a Flex Goal

If you are looking at basketball goals and considering a flex goal, just keep in mind that the right choice for your needs is very specific. Some types of basketball goals, for example, are meant for heavy duty use, capable of taking loads from heavy slam dunks and other basketball stunts. This might include from extended competitive use up to and including NCAA and NBA games.

Other types of basketball goals are not as capable of taking such extreme stress loads and are meant for more personal recreational use. Of course, your needs may not call for more than this, and there is no reason to buy beyond your anticipated needs. This type of basketball goal, however, also offers a more economical alternative to more heavy duty goals.

Such a type of economic goal is a flex basketball goal. This type of basketball goal, as the name implies, is capable of at least limited flexible movement to be able to deflect the forces of free throws or light slam dunks. However, the flex basketball goal is still too rigid to be able to withstand repeated or hard slam dunks or other extreme basketball stunts without breaking.

The FT 187 can be thought of as a bridge between the light use flex basketball goal and heavier basketball goals. This rim is a super heavy duty use flex basketball goal, able to take greater punishment than inferior basketball goals but still remains an affordable option compared to true breakaway basketball goals. It's an ideal choice if you're looking for an economical basketball goal for aggressive, competitive playground use, or as a side court goal for a school gym.

Choosing an option along these lines will feature super heavy duty, extra strength engineering, design, and construction. These types of basketball goals have dual return springs for greater stress and load resistance. Continuous net locks ensure that the net will remain attached to the basketball hoop through repeated shots, weather and abuse.

The FT 187, like many other types of flex basketball goal, also features a fully enclosed mechanism. Furthermore, it also features a durable powder coat finish. Both of these features are designed to make the FT 187 last for a very long time through weather, corrosion and extended use and abuse while still preserving an authentic and clean look without the need or worry for maintenance or repainting.

Although the FT 187 is a more durable, super heavy duty basketball goal, it does not mean that installation is any more difficult or specialized compared to inferior basketball goals. The goal is able to be installed on most backboards, so the chances of you having to switch out backboards from your playground or gym side court are not great. The net and mounting hardware are included as well. The only thing light about is its weight; with a shipping weight of only 24 pounds, it won't break your back or your wallet during installation. Whatever specific basketball goals you consider, make sure they meet your needs for play, durability and location.

Basketball Hoops For Different Skills and Ages - Young Children

If you are shopping around for basketball hoops, you will no doubt be asking many questions and be faced with many possible choices. There are naturally a very large variety of different brands to choose from. There are also just as many different types of basketball goal and basketball hoop to choose from. All of these different types are designed to perform differently depending on your needs and skill level.

If you are shopping for a basketball goal for your children, you should naturally consider what type of play style they are looking for. The play style of your children will depend upon their age.

Very young children will need to learn basic throwing moves first. As your children get older, they may wish to know the details and rules of playing the game better while still being accommodated in terms of easy basketball hoop height and distance. Older, pre-teen or teenage children may wish to emulate their NCAA or NBA role models as closely as they can. So they may request a truly professional and authentic NCAA or NBA spec approved basketball goal installed at a height and court distance perfectly matching those seen on TV.

For very young children, you may consider purchasing a floor basketball hoop set as an introduction to basketball. A floor basketball hoop set is little more than a simple ring stand lined with a net. In practice, it is very similar to the many type of novelty basketball hoops seen attached to trash cans in various office settings.

A floor basketball hoop set is set very low to the ground, and the distance away from the basketball hoop is as far as the thrower wishes to sit. Because of the low floor height, this type of basketball hoop is best suited for throwing from a seated position on a floor. This makes practice throwing very easy for young children, and is ideal for teaching muscle control during shooting practice and to introduce the basic idea of throwing basketballs at a basketball hoop. Very soft balls can be used for safety, or small rubber bladder basketballs can be used for authenticity. These types of basketball hoop also tend to be very affordable.

The typical next step for a basketball hoop is a free standing basketball goal. This type of basketball goal is perhaps the most diverse, and can include basketball goals immediately above that of a floor basketball hoop set to professional field basketball goals more suited to competition games.

Some types of free standing basketball hoops are still very low to the ground and can be height adjusted with young children in mind. These provide many of the same easy features as a floor basketball hoop set, but with a greater distance from the floor to build additional muscle skill and understanding of longer shots. Other types of free standing, pole mounted basketball goals are mounted on a more rigid pole, which may often be covered in a foam-like material for added safety.

Basketball Hoops For Different Skills and Ages - Older Children

If you're currently in the market for a new basketball hoop and have already done a lot of shopping then you have probably already discovered that there are a lot of different brands of basketball hoops and goals to choose from. You have probably also discovered by now that there is a very large variety of different types of basketball hoops and goals to choose from as well.

All of these different types of basketball hoops and basketball goals are designed to serve different purposes. Although they all have a net and a basketball hoop, their use may differ depending on their function.

For example, some types of basketball hoops are very simple and are designed for very young children to practice building muscle memory and the concept of throwing a ball at a target. On the opposite side of the scale, there are complex basketball goals designed to be able to take heavy slam dunks and other extended stunts, and are specifically designed to be used on college basketball courts and even for NCAA and NBA televised games.

If you are looking at basketball hoops for your children, you should take into consideration not only their current age and abilities, but their future growth and interest in the game of basketball as well. The very simple type of basketball hoop previously described, designed for young children, would obviously be appropriate if your children are still very young and just beginning to learn muscle and motor skills.

Somewhat older children, however, may feel that a more complex basketball goal is appropriate in order to practice more complicated shots at longer distances, but may still require a relatively easy basketball hoop to shoot at, perhaps one that is still padded as a safety feature.

What happens when your pre-teens and teenagers are a bit more aware of their NCAA and NBA heroes? Chances are their desires and needs require the more authentic NCAA or NBA approved basketball goals that require either a heavy duty goal pole or mounting above your driveway. These styles are capable of handling repeated heavy slam dunks and other professional stunts.

If your children are not quite at that age, however, or only express a casual or passing interest in the sport of basketball then a simple freestanding, pole mounted basketball hoop may be appropriate. As mentioned, some of these models are padded for younger children as a safety feature.

Many of these models are portable and adjustable in order to accommodate a variety of skill levels and space needs. These types of basketball goals are arguably the most diverse, and can include professional field goals designed for NBA use. For your children, however, you are probably going to be most interested in a flexible and affordable basketball goal with adjustable height and ease of storage and transportation.

You can find portable and adjustable basketball goals with the same high quality acrylic or glass backboards requires at high school level play. Each one is very specific in its backboard size, flexibility and utility. So there are certain to be a few basketball goals just perfect for your needs.
